Lesson 6
The present indicative:
Irregular verbs
Apart from verbs that are only irregular in the first person singular; yo, there are verbs that are completely irregular except in the first person plural; nosotros.
Decir (to say) | Tener (to have) | Venir (to come) | Estar (to be) | Oir (to hear) | Ser (to be) | Ir (to go) | |
Yo | Digo | Tengo | Vengo | Estoy | Oigo | Soy | Voy |
Tú | Dices | Tienes | Vienes | Estás | Oyes | Eres | Vas |
Él, ella, usted | Dice | Tiene | Viene | Está | Oye | Es | Va |
Nosotros | Decimos | Tenemos | Venimos | Estamos | Oímos | Somos | Vamos |
Ellos, ellas, ustedes | Dicen | Tienen | Vienen | Están | Oyen | Son | van |
As you can see, there are two verbs that mean ‘to be:’ SER and ESTAR. In Spanish, both verbs are used to express the same thing. But in different situations. Later on, this will be explained into detail. For explanations now, have a look at our pinterest, where it is frequently explained.
Also, as you might have noticed by now, the 2nd person plural is missing in this table, as well as in some previous lessons. The reason for this is that in Guatemala, Vosotros (you, plural) is not used. Instead, the third person plural is used, always; USTEDES. In previous chapters you did find the Vosotros form in some exercises, because we wanted to introduce you to it. However, as it is a difficult conjugation and unnecessary, it might be best to forget it for now.
