The defined article is used in front of abstract nouns, measurements, and in front of the words ciudad (city), capital (capital city), clase (class), iglesia (church), aldea (settlement) and after a preposition.
La inmensidad del mar. (The immensity of the sea.)
La profundidad de los ríos. (The violence of the rivers.)
Estamos en la ciudad. (We are in the city.)
Viajamos a la capital. (We are travelling to the capital city.)
¿Cuánto cuesta la libra de tomate? (What costs a pound of tomatoes?)
Nos quedamos fuera de la clase. (We were out of the class room.)
